Five days after the deadly windstorm, more than 130,000 homes, businesses and schools in the Houston area remain without electricity, according to CenterPoint Energy, which says power restorations should be “substantially complete” by Wednesday.

At least eight Houston-area residents have died as a result of the derecho – a long-lived wind storm that swept across the region from west to east and produced two tornadoes while causing widespread power outages and significant damage to trees, buildings and infrastructure.

Thousands were without electricity Tuesday night as severe storms and gusty winds moved into the Chicago area.

Electric utility ComEd said more than 12,700 customers were without electricity as of 9 p.m., but crews were working on restoring power in affected areas.

High temperatures of about 90 degrees or more are expected every day this week in the deep south and Gulf Coast..
