Norovirus, also known as the “stomach bug” or “stomach flu,” has surged by 340% during the 2024–25 season, according to the Centers for Diseases and Control (CDC). This is the highest spike in cases since at least 2012.
Norovirus is transmitted through the ingestion of infected fecal or vomit particles found in food or on surfaces. The CDC estimates there are between 19 and 21 million cases of norovirus every year in the U.S.
The CDC also offers these tips for norovirus prevention:
- Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces
- Cook shellfish thoroughly and wash fruits and vegetables
- Make "ample use" of hot soap and water (Alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not effectively kill norovirus)
- Stay home when sick for 48 hours after symptoms stop
- Wash laundry in hot water
