Celebrated activist and philosopher CORNEL WEST (71), who is running as an independent in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, has been disqualified by Michigan's Bureau of Elections from appearing on the General Election ballot in November due to a "technical violation of state law."
Michigan's elections director says that the affidavits of identity submitted to the Secretary of State's Office for West and his vice presidential running mate, MELINA ABDULLAH (51), were not properly notarized.
An "affidavit of identity" is a legal document that is most often provided to a court, bank, or business as evidence of a person's identity or signature. Attorney MARK BREWER, a political consultant and former chairman of Michigan's Democratic Party, alerted the Bureau of Elections about the West campaign's affidavits.

Last year, Brewer filed a lawsuit in the Michigan Court of Claims saying former president DONALD TRUMP (78) should be barred from the state's General Election ballot due to the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was adopted after the Civil War.
Some black voters view West as an alternative to KAMALA HARRIS (59) and Trump. West, however, is only on the ballot in five states (Alaska, Colorado, South Carolina, Oregon and Vermont) and is not considered much of a factor in the presidential race in Michigan or nationally, but his candidacy has been cited by black voters disenchanted with the Democratic Party.
