When we heard that Hollywood actor DENZEL WASHINGTON (70) had gotten baptized, we thought, "That's great!" then we heard that the Academy Award winner had also been ordained as a minister, and we thought, "Not so great."
A "new in the faith" preacher refers to a person who has recently converted to a religion and is now actively preaching or sharing their faith, often lacking significant experience or deep theological knowledge compared to more seasoned ministers, potentially leading to a focus on personal testimonies and basic Christian concepts rather than complex doctrinal issues.
Over the years, we've seen other "new in the faith" celebrities make the leap from the stage to the pulpit, from kings of soul, like SOLOMON BURKE (70), to kings of rap, like JOSEPH "REV RUN" SIMMONS (60), MASON BETHA (49) and, most recently, KANYE WEST (47).
It usually ends badly.
Washington, whose father was a Pentecostal preacher for 60 years, was baptized and received his minister’s license in New York City’s Kelly Temple in the same service.
In the New Testament of the Bible, the apostle Paul outlines the necessary qualifications for "overseers and deacons" in 1 Timothy. In the 3rd verse of chapter 6, Paul writes that a church leader "must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil."
We have no doubt that Denzel loves the Lord and is most likely genuinely sincere in his conversion, but that does not mean he should be pastoring a congregation. Washington only recently admitted that he was given to drunkenness for 15 years of his life and has been accused of cheating on his wife for 20 years.
Being the son of a preacher man doesn't make you believer. Just look at the sons of Eli in the Old Testament of the Bible or any video of NICK CANNON (44) speaking. There's also the question of how a godly man could abide in an ungodly situation, like Hollywood, for the better part of a half-century?
The simple answer appears to be money, wine and women.
A lot of celebrities are trying to "square up" now that DONALD TRUMP (78) has been re-elected, which has led to. reports of suspected down-low men, like LEONARDO DICAPRIO (50) and NBA star DWIGHT HOWARD (39) getting engaged (to women). Denzel's name also came up in the whole SEAN "DIDDY" COMBS (54) freak off party sex scandal.
Look, we're not here to judge, but we do think Denzel should prove himself as a deacon in quiet, humble service before seeking to teach and lead others. because it's not a role that should be taken lightly.
